They Want Blessings, Not God

They Want Blessings, Not God

By Khanyisa Manganyi

Let’s cut straight to it—many don’t want God. They just want what’s in His pocket. Faith has become a shopping cart at a spiritual supermarket. People pray like they’re placing an order: “Lord, new car, better job, miracle healing—oh, and make it express delivery.” God is treated like Amazon Prime—fast, convenient, and no strings attached. But here’s the hard truth: God is not your delivery guy. He’s the Creator of heaven and earth, and He refuses to be reduced to your personal wish machine.

Jesus said, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33). The promise is clear—God isn’t against blessings. But notice the order: Him first, everything else second. Yet too many flip it around. They want the “things” and only sprinkle God on top when it suits them.

The Israelites did the same in the wilderness. God split the sea, rained down bread, dropped meat from the sky, and they still complained. Why? Because they wanted the gifts but not the Giver. And honestly, not much has changed. Some today still cry, “God, bless me but don’t change me. Provide for me but don’t require anything from me. Be my Savior but not my Lord.”

And here’s the problem—when your faith is built on blessings, the moment blessings delay, so does your faith. No breakthrough? You think God forgot you. No healing? You assume He doesn’t care. That’s not faith, that’s a spiritual sugar rush—sweet for a moment, empty in the end. Real faith says, “Even if the blessing doesn’t come, I still want You.”

Jesus didn’t say, “Follow me and I’ll make you comfortable.” He said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). That’s not the Instagram version of faith. That’s raw. That’s sacrifice. That’s love. And it’s the only way this thing works.

Because blessings fade. Houses crack, cars rust, money flies, relationships break. But God? He never leaves. If you only wanted Him for the benefits, you’ll be left bitter when the benefits run out. But if you want Him for Him, you’ll discover something deeper—you’ll still have peace when the account is empty, joy when the diagnosis is bad, and hope when the world is against you.

So here’s the punchline: Stop chasing what God can do for you and start chasing who He is to you. Stop praying like He owes you something and start living like He already gave you everything at the cross. Because once you understand that His presence is better than any present, your faith won’t just shake heaven—it’ll shake you to the core.
