You Can’t Sell Your Soul: The Devil’s Lie and God’s Truth

You Can’t Sell Your Soul: The Devil’s Lie and God’s Truth

By Khanyisa Manganyi

You can’t sell your soul—because it was never yours to sell. That truth changes everything. In today’s world, where people think they have to give up their soul for fame, power, or money, the truth is this: your soul belongs to God. The breath in your lungs was not made by any man or deal—it came straight from the Creator. But the devil loves to lie. He tricks people into thinking they can trade something that was never theirs in the first place.

The idea of “selling your soul” might sound like a story from a movie or a song, but it’s something many people believe and even fear. And sadly, some people don’t even realize they’ve made some sort of agreement. That’s exactly how the enemy works—quiet lies, hidden traps, promises that sound sweet but come with a price. The devil won’t show up with red horns and a scary voice. He comes through things people want: success, love, popularity, money, attention. He tells people, “Just give me a little part of you… and I’ll give you everything you’ve ever dreamed of.”

But here’s the truth: he doesn’t need your whole soul if he can control you. Many people—famous or not—have said that they gave something up just to "make it." A woman once shared, “I got tired of struggling. One day I said, ‘Whoever can make me rich and famous, I’m yours.’ Everything changed after that. I got everything I asked for… but I couldn’t sleep anymore. I felt watched. I knew I gave something away.”

Another young man said, “I joined a secret group. They made me say a few strange words. I didn’t think it was serious, but after that, weird things started happening. I saw things. I heard voices. I felt like something followed me.”

A former satanist, now a pastor, once shared how people make deals without realizing it. “Sometimes it's not blood. It’s sex, or music, or promises. And once they say yes, the devil has a legal right. They may not know it—but he knows. He uses it against them.” He went on to say, “The devil is a legalist. That means he takes words, choices, and actions seriously. If you open the door even a little, he walks in.”

Another pastor who helps people who are possessed said a teenage girl once played a “love spell game” with friends just for fun. After that, she couldn’t sleep. She had nightmares. When they prayed for her, a spirit spoke through her and said, “She came to us. She opened the door.” She didn’t even know she did anything wrong. But darkness doesn’t care if you were “just playing.”

This is not a game. This is not just a scary story. This is real. The enemy wants your purpose, your peace, your voice, your calling. He doesn’t need to scare you—he just needs to distract you from God. That’s why he makes darkness look exciting, fame look easy, and sin look fun. He uses your pain, your loneliness, your need for love, and your dreams against you—if you let him.

But here’s something even more powerful: even if you made a mistake, even if you opened the wrong door, God can close it. Even if you gave something away in your past—your body, your words, your promise—Jesus can take it back. When Jesus died on the cross, He didn’t just save you—He broke every evil contract.

The Bible says in Colossians 2:14,

“He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.”
And in verse 15:
“He defeated the spiritual powers and made them powerless.”

The devil has no power over you when Jesus steps in. Your past can be washed clean. Your mistakes can be forgiven. The spiritual chains can fall off. And you can start fresh.

If you’ve ever played with things you shouldn’t have—magic, chants, spells, secret groups, rituals—or if you’ve ever said things out of desperation like “I’d give anything for this…”—you don’t have to stay in fear. You can come back to God. Say no to the enemy. Say yes to Jesus. You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be willing.

God wants your heart, not your performance. He wants your honesty, not your pretend strength. You don’t have to keep running. You don’t have to keep trying to win by yourself. Come back to the One who made you. He knows your name. He made your soul. And He’s waiting.

You don’t own your soul—but you do get to choose who you give it to.
The enemy lies. But God always tells the truth. And the truth is this: you are loved, you are chosen, and you can be free.
